Matthews Nzimande is a Mining Engineer by profession, and he started his career in Hard-rock mining in
1989 on Western Deep Levels as a Learner Miner. He
obtained his NHD Metal Mining from Technikon
Witwatersrand in 1993 whilst a Learner Diplomat on
President Steyn Mine in Welkom. He moved up the
mining hierarchy rapidly, from Learner Miner to
eventually serving as General Manager On Northam
Platinum Ltd, Anglogold Ashanti (Tau-Lekoa Mine)
and also Anglo American Platinum (Swartklip Mine as
well as Rustenburg Central Services). He is a member
of Professional Bodies like Association of Mine Managers (AMMSA), Engineering Council of South Africa
(ECSA) and South African Institute of Mining and
Metallurgy (SAIIM). He was an AMMSA President in
2012.
